Doug English Provides August 2025 Market and Portfolio Update

Mid-Summer Market Trends: What to Know as August Kicks Off

As the summer heat surges across the country, many investors are wondering if the markets will cool off or heat up with it. In this month’s market update, Doug English reflects on July’s modest returns and shares insights into what we expect as we head into August. With historical patterns, current rotations, and a steady strategy in place, Doug reassures clients that a calm, consistent approach continues to be the best path forward.

July Recap: Modest Gains, Steady Markets

Despite the scorching temperatures outdoors, financial markets in July didn’t exactly follow suit. Equity markets saw modest growth, delivering returns in the range of 1% to 2%. Fixed income markets, on the other hand, remained largely flat. While not the most exciting month for portfolios, the performance was consistent with expectations and a reminder that not every month will bring dramatic changes.

As Doug explains:

“Our clients can look for a change of somewhere between one and two percent for the month of July.”

These numbers reflect steady conditions—a positive sign for long-term investors who rely on strategic consistency rather than chasing short-term gains.

August: A Month of Historical Pullbacks?

Looking ahead, August has a reputation for being a slower month in the markets. It’s not uncommon to see a slight pullback during this time as volume tends to drop and investors refocus after the flurry of first-half activity.

Doug cautions that while history can offer guidance, it’s not a guarantee:

“August, being the peak of summer, tends to be a month when we see a little bit of a pullback in markets historically. Doesn’t mean it’s gonna happen this time. There’s plenty of news to drive the markets, but if it did, that would be normal.”

This is a helpful reminder that dips aren’t necessarily a cause for concern. In fact, they may be part of the natural rhythm of the markets—especially during a time when trading activity typically slows down.

Rotations and Rankings: No Changes Needed

A hallmark of ACT Advisors’ investment approach is the monthly review and re-ranking of asset positions based on performance data. This disciplined strategy helps ensure that each client’s portfolio remains aligned with current trends while avoiding unnecessary overreactions.

In August, Doug confirms that the rankings showed no need for adjustment:

“As we rank the positions, as we always do, looking at how they did this previous month and how that performs in our ranking—none of them needed to change going into August, so all of the rotations will stay in place.”

This consistency offers peace of mind and speaks to the strength of the current allocations. When no changes are required, it often means the portfolio is well-aligned with market conditions and on track to meet long-term objectives.

Staying Cool With a Steady Strategy

In a season marked by both literal and figurative heat, the ACT Advisors team encourages clients to stay cool and focus on the bigger picture. Market movements in any given month are only one part of a much larger journey toward financial security and success.

Doug closes this month’s update with a personal message of gratitude and encouragement:

“Hope that you and your family are enjoying a wonderful summer. We thank you very much for your business and we’ll talk to you again very soon.”

Whether August delivers gains, pulls back slightly, or simply holds steady, ACT Advisors remains committed to thoughtful, informed guidance built to weather any market season.
